Located to the south of Turkey in the glistening Mediterranean Sea is the beautiful island of Cyprus. Although often overshadow by the Mediterranean's two larger islands, Sicily and Sardinia, Cyprus remains one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations.
On a holiday in Cyprus there are several destinations worth bearing in mind. One of the most popular of these is the Church of Ayios Lazaros.
Built in the 9th century AD, the Church of Ayios Lazaros holds the reputation of being the second tomb of Lazarus. According to popular Greek belief, after Lazarus was raised from the dead he moved to Cyprus and is believed to have been buried there. Unfortunately, while the initial resting place of Lazarus was commonly known at the time of his death, it was later disturbed by Arab raids and since then the exact location has remained unknown.
Today, the church - which was reconstructed in the 17th century - serves as a popular destination for tourists; its legendary status making it an exciting attraction for an afternoon away from the beach.
Choirokoitia - one of the Mediterranean's best Neolithic sites - today stands as one of the island's most interesting tourist attractions to visit. Choirokoitia was discovered in 1934 and since then has attracted thousands of visitors to the island, keen to learn more about the history of early settlement on the Mediterranean. Archaeologists believe that the site dates back as far as 7000 BC when settlers arrived from the Middle East.
On a trip to Choirokoitia, one of the most interesting things to discover about the settlers is their burial techniques. It was quite common for residents of this settlement to bury those who have passed away beneath the floors. Unusual by modern standards, the act is a reflection of the spiritual beliefs that were important to the islanders at that time.
Not too far away in the Lanarca District, Stavrovouni Monastery is Cyprus' oldest monastery and one of the island's most popular tourist attractions. The monastery was founded in the 4th century by Saint Helena and is internationally famous for the fragment of the cross that is contained within its walls.
The monastery is located on top of a hill and is popular with both locals and tourists alike, thanks to the beautiful views it commands and the unique story it tells. Although the climb can be a little steep, the magnificent views of Cyprus make it worthwhile.
Cyprus has an exciting history that few other places in the world can compare to. With so many famous attractions throughout the island, there is plenty to see and do when enjoying holidays in Cyprus.
